Marla Thomas

Hello My Name Is...

Marla Thomas

My name is Marla Thomas and this is my 6th year of teaching and my 5th year with Pelham City Schools. For the 2018-2019 school year, I am excited to be returning to the classroom in 3rd grade. As an elementary student, 3rd grade was my absolute favorite grade in school!  It is also my favorite age and curriculum to teach.  I am so excited about being a part of the Pelham Ridge family! I graduated from the University of Alabama in 2003 with an undergraduate degree in choreography and performance with a minor in business. Before teaching I was an assistant company director and dance teacher at a studio in Tuscaloosa for 10 years. I have a dual certification Masters in Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education from UAB and was fortunate enough to complete my student teaching here in Pelham at Valley Intermediate School in 3rd grade! I am a life long learner and am currently working toward my Educational Leadership certification at UAB and will finish in the Spring of 2019.  Also new this year, I am excited about becoming the Pelham High School Dance Team sponsor.  I am thrilled to be able to use my passion for dance to help mentor and coach our PHS Pantherettes.   My husband and I live in Pelham with our three children, Patrick (6yrs), Jackson (5yrs), and Jameson (1year). Patrick will be a 1st grader and Jackson will be in kindergarten here at Pelham Ridge.  I love that I get to be both a parent and an educator in our community.

I believe that every child learns differently. I strive to meet the needs of all students and their vaying learning styles.  It is important that students feel a part of our leaning community and learn from one other. I love seeing the "light bulb" go off when students make connections or learn something new. With Pelham Ridge being a Leader in Me school, we will be working on life long skills to help them navigate the world.  Helping children see that they are leaders no matter their age or ability can be transfomative to helping them learn and contribute their girfts to society. By equipping them with how to apply the 7 Habits daily within the classroom, we are providing students with a skill set they can use at home and in the community. We are truly helping mold the future citizens and leaders of our world.
